Massive Cyberattack Targets U.S. Power Grid Infrastructure

WASHINGTON — Federal cybersecurity officials are responding to one of the most serious cyberattacks ever recorded against United States critical infrastructure, after state-sponsored hackers successfully penetrated control systems managing portions of the American power grid across at least seven states.
The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) issued an emergency directive late Tuesday, ordering all affected utility operators to immediately isolate compromised systems and implement emergency backup protocols.
"This is not a theoretical threat — this is an active intrusion into systems that millions of Americans depend on every day," CISA Director Jen Easterly said at an emergency briefing. "We are working around the clock with our federal and private sector partners to contain and eliminate this threat."
Officials say the attack bears the hallmarks of a sophisticated nation-state operation, with early forensic evidence pointing toward a hacking group with ties to a foreign government. No attribution has been officially confirmed.
While no widespread blackouts have been reported, officials warn that the intruders had positioned themselves deep within operational technology networks — the systems that physically control power generation and distribution equipment — and could have triggered significant outages had they chosen to act.
"They were inside the walls," one senior intelligence official said. "The question we are still answering is: what did they see, and what did they leave behind?"
The FBI, NSA, and Department of Energy have all activated emergency response teams. President Trump was briefed on the situation Tuesday evening at the White House.
Energy sector analysts warn that the attack exposes long-standing vulnerabilities in aging U.S. grid infrastructure, much of which was built decades before modern cybersecurity threats existed.
Congress is expected to hold emergency hearings next week, with both parties calling for accelerated investment in grid hardening and cyber defense.
